The prime goal of National Policy on Education, 1986 is the universalization of Elementary Education and eradication of adult illiteracy. In order to fulfil the goal of National Policy on Education, 1986 and smooth implementation of its programme of action, the Govt. of India felt the need to establish some grass root level teacher education institute like DIET each district of all over the country. In this regard in 1989 a District Institute of Education and Training was established for Sonitpur district at a very historically important place of the district Biswanath Chariali. It is about 75 km far from the District headquarters Tezpur. Initially the DIET, Sonitpur was established at Chariali Basic Training Centre complex with approximately 44 Bighas of land area within the Biswanath Chariali Township. As a result of the abolition of BTC, the DIET occupied the entire institute of teacher education for the district with new infrastructural facilities. Now the DIET, Sonitpur has become a full fledged and one of the best DIETs of the State.
